Blitch Knevel built a full-scale mock ICU and let the nurses, doctors, and staff come in to use and critique it. As a result, patient rooms are much larger that usual; all headwall units can accommodate medical gas lines and monitors; unique ‘break-away’ doors can be slid out of the way to move patients, equipment, and personnel into and out of the rooms quickly and easily; the rooms are plumbed for dialysis in the event of kidney failure. The entire design is very flexible, functional, and comfortable.
